Hodge & Associates, Inc. was hired by Design West Architects as a sub-consultant on a front entry renovation for the Chi Omega sorority house. Upon presentation of the conceptual landscape design and preliminary cost estimate, the client chose to reduce the scope of the architectural renovation in order to implement all of the elements of the proposed landscape renovation.

One of the major challenges of the design was to provide an accessible route to the front door from a sloping sidewalk along the street. Another challenge was preserving the many existing mature plants on site, and blending new elements with them. Lighting, seating walls, and a more formal approach to the front entry were added in an effort to create a more welcoming space for visitors, and a more usable space for residents of the house.

As project manager in a small office with only two landscape architects, I personally handled most aspects of this project. I developed the proposal; coordinated with the survey crew to develop a base map; completed all design phases of the project; selected and sourced materials; developed cost estimates; drafted the construction documents; coordinated with the civil engineers on the structural engineering for the seating walls; and created/edited specifications.
